WING Series - Information - Maximum USB Cable Length

Post: # 159Post Dana Tucker »

All Behringer WING digital mixers use USB 2.0 for data communication with computers for recording and playback. While USB 2.0 is generally reliable, performance can be affected by cable length and quality. This article outlines best practices to ensure stable operation when connecting your X32 mixer to a computer via USB.

Recommended Maximum Cable Length:

1. USB 2.0 has a maximum recommended cable length of 5 meters (16 feet). This is the universally accepted maximum for dependable USB 2.0 connectivity.

Using Ferrite Coils:

1. For critical audio devices like the X32, USB cables with ferrite coils are recommended to help reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). This is particularly helpful in live or studio environments with multiple electronic devices.

Exceeding 5 Meters:

1. While cables longer than 5 meters may function, their reliability cannot be guaranteed.

2. To prevent audio dropouts or device recognition issues, always stay within the 5-meter limit.

Daisy-Chaining Cables:

1. Avoid daisy-chaining multiple USB cables to exceed the length limit. This often results in signal degradation and can interrupt audio streaming or communication with the computer.

Using USB Hubs to Extend Range:

1. If your setup requires a longer reach, consider using self-powered USB 2.0 hubs.

2. Hubs can extend USB connectivity in 5-meter segments.

3. Each hub must be externally powered, and no single cable run between hubs should exceed 5 meters.

Cable Brand Recommendations:

1. We do not recommend a specific brand of USB cable for use with the X32 Series mixers. There are many different cable brands on the market, and we simply do not have the means to test them all. However, any USB cable that meets the USB 2.0 standard, is within the recommended length, and ideally features ferrite shielding, should function correctly.

Summary of Best Practices:

1. Use USB 2.0 cables no longer than 5 meters when connecting to the X32.

2. Choose cables with ferrite shielding to minimize EMI in demanding environments.

3. Do not daisy-chain USB cables.

4. Extend distance with self-powered USB 2.0 hubs spaced every 5 meters or less.

5. Use quality cables that meet USB 2.0 standards regardless of brand.

Following these recommendations will help ensure a stable and high-performance connection between your Behringer X32 mixer and your computer.
