Source Extractor

SOURCE EXTRACTOR is based on the 500 series version of the noise gate section in the Neve Portico 5045 channel strip. THRESHOLD and DEPTH (range) controls are provided. FAST enables a quicker attach time and PEAK toggles between RMS and peak detection. When in RMS mode, the attack times are 100 ms and 200 ms. When in peak mode, the attack times are 200 ms and 1s.

The Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5045 is not a traditional channel strip with a dedicated “noise gate” section in the conventional sense. Instead, it’s called a Primary Source Enhancer and shares some traits with noise gates but operates on a different principle, focusing on reducing feedback and improving vocal clarity in live sound environments.

Key Controls:

  • Threshold: This sets the signal level at which the 5045 begins to attenuate the signal.
  • Depth: This knob determines how much attenuation is applied when the signal falls below the Threshold. A setting of “0” means no attenuation, while “-20 dB” provides deep attenuation.
  • Time Constant: This controls how quickly the attenuation occurs in the quiet sections between words or phrases. According to Markertek, “A” is the fastest setting, and “F” is the slowest.
  • RMS / Peak: This button selects the signal detection mode. In Peak mode (button illuminated), the 5045 responds faster, which can help prevent the beginnings of words from being cut off. In RMS mode (button not illuminated), it has a slower, more averaged response.
  • Process Engage: This button activates the Primary Source Enhancer effect.
  • Process Active LED: This LED indicates when the 5045 is actively attenuating the signal.

In summary, the Neve Portico 5045, while sharing some aspects with noise gates, is a dedicated Primary Source Enhancer that offers precise control over dynamics for reducing feedback and improving clarity in live sound applications.
